Following the dreadful events in Haiti and Chile, the Year 8 Geographers have been learning about our “Dangerous World”, looking at the causes and effects of tectonic events. Following a series of lessons about volcanoes, the students were tasked with showing their creativity by making a model volcano.
As well as forming the general shape, they had to show the key features of a volcano such as the magma chamber, vent and crater with the option of showing different types of volcanic eruption. As usual, the students’ creativity has been truly inspiring. We have seen volcanoes made from a wide variety of materials: papier-mâché, wall plaster, cardboard and even cake! Some students even made erupting volcanoes with a combination of food colouring, bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Some of the model volcanoes are now on display in the library. Well done to all the students for the hard work that they put in to create the volcanoes and many thanks to all the understanding parents who may have helped a little bit!
